That cake is freakin' AWESOME. I betcha Henry remembers it forever 'n' ever. I still reminisce about the fabulous concoctions my mother constructed for our birthdays when we were small. (And I bet she had some horror stories about melting frosting, us having grown up in Las Vegas and all.)

that looks great. of course, i wouldn't eat it because i have a thing where i don't eat blue foods (why would anyone want to??) but he did a good job doing r2d2. i hope that's not what everyone said, without mention to all the pain and suffering you went through making the 3-tiered brick cake.

that blue gel is the creepiest thing i've ever seen though. it's worse than aim toothpaste, on the level of The Abyss creepiness.

I sympathize. Really. This spring, I made a chocolate cake recipe I've made several times before. The cake came out so horrible and crumbly it could not be frosted. I cried, threw it away, cried some more, and bought a cake (horrors!) for my daughters birthday. First time in 12 years she did not have a homemade cake. I decided it must be the oven, bought an oven thermometer, discovered my oven is 50 degrees to hot, and attempted the cake again for my younger daughter's birthday. It came out better, but still not right, and I had to practically glue the frosting on, in tears. But I did it. And everyone ate it. It wasn't good, but they knew better than to say anything!

But the only thing that matters is how it looks when the picture is taken. All baked goods are as grass--they riseth up and are cut down in short order.

I too suffered the melting frosting syndrome. I know what it was though, you see one of my brood has a milk allergy and I attempted to substitute a very healthy all natural cholesterol lowering yet tasty margarine for the butter in the frosting. But, alas, healthy margarines melt at room temperature, this is why they don't clog your arteries, and I too had to frost in 2 minute increments and then rerefrigerate the cake. I also attempted to use all natural vegetable based food coloring, and it was such a sad little, melting colorless cake that I didn't even bother taking the picture. Oh well, live and learn.

I think that's just excellent. Impressive. Who cares if it melted 10 minutes later? You have photographically preserved that demon cake's moment of perfection for all eternity. We shall always remember that cake thusly and lo, be impressed.

Btw, I have the same cake layer problems. Now I get cakes from my favorite bakery. When I ordered a cake last year for my son's birthday, he said, "You mean, you didn't make it with love?" I said, "No, but I ordered it with love."

Really not the same, I know.

WOW! I want one. I have a picture of me at 16 at my sister's birthday party with a blue frosting mouth. It was surprisingly fetching...
