Seven years!

As of tomorrow, I'll have been writing this blog for seven years. My blog's a first-grader! When I began writing here, Henry was sixteen months old; now he's shaving. (Well, he could shave. His legs, anyway. Kid's got some hairy legs.)

Here's a visual, to help you cry. My baby then:

shirtless

And now:

He wanted me to sled.

I know.

Before I start looking at more pictures of my son as an adorable toddler and spend the rest of the afternoon bawling on the couch, I wanted to say thank you. The last seven years have been action-packed, in both excellent and terrible ways, and through it all you've supported me, cheered me on, and given me a kick in the ass when I needed it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

According to my stats there are many of you who read and never comment. Which is fine, but today, please say hello! Tell me who you are, what brought you to Finslippy, what you're up to, what your favorite cheese is--whatever. I really don't care. I mean, I care, but I'm not going to demand you tell me your life story. But I would welcome hearing your life story! If you felt like writing it. I'll stop now.

As a reward for commenting, you'll be in the running to receive a copy of my friend Jessie Sholl's new book, Dirty Secret. I wrote about Jessie's book on my Redbook blog, but I wanted to do a giveaway here. Dirty Secret is Jessie's story of growing up with a mom who's a hoarder, and it's a doozie of a book. (And yes, I did just write the word "doozie." I couldn't decide between that and "humdinger.") It's funny and harrowing and ultimately uplifting. You will enjoy it! So comment, and a week from today I'll announce the winner.

Reader Comments (946)

I'm not entirely sure how I started reading you, but I've been reading for probably around 3 years. Either I found you from Eden, or Eden from you. My reader is ridiculously full and the blogs are very intertwined, so who knows. And yes, I'm one of those maybe kind of creepy never comments but totally reads every. single. post. Now I feel a little dirty.

I love cheese, like, any cheese. My love affair with cheese is sultry and sordid and probably a little self-destructive, to be honest. Except for bleu, can't do it, not even in dressing, I don't know what his problem is, but he sucks.

Congrats on seven years! I have no idea how I first found your blog, but have been reading for quite a few years, and yours has always been one of my favorites. As for me, I'm a grad student and freelance writer. With some pepperjack cheese in my fridge.

I was sitting in my college library during my senior year, doodling pictures of what I thought were decent re-imaginings of bats and compulsively clicking the refresh button to see if I had any new e-mails instead of working on a portfolio project. At some point, an e-mail from a friend did come through, with the subject line, "Did you have a kid?"

As far as I was aware, I hadn't birthed anything, but the e-mail contained a link, so I figured I'd check it out to be sure. It led me to the post you'd written about seeing Dan Rather, mooing, and, ultimately, giving birth to Henry.

Apparently, my friend is (or was at the time) pretty sure I have what it takes to be a writer/storyteller of your caliber one day, which was (and is) very flattering. I went ahead and quit doodling and read everything from the arrival of Henry to whatever your current post was at the time (which was about 3-ish years worth of posts and a much more interesting method of procrastination), and I've kept up with your blog ever since.

As for the cheese: Trader Joe's cranberry-covered goat cheese.

Many happy returns. I probably got here via Fussy a long time ago. I started reading online journals in 2000 (thank you sketchy Ask Jeeves job!) and have appreciated lots of wonderful writing since then. Thanks for the wry and the hi anxiety. Emmenthal or Gruyere, two swiss cheeses I cannot choose between. Now I'm thinking of pretty light brown Swiss cows with horns. Happy sigh.

Happy Blog Birthday!

Congratulations on seven years! Your blog has lasted longer than my last "long-term" relationship! Can I tell people we're going steady?

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeanna

congratulations on 7 years. and thank you writing. i relied on this blog to keep me laughing (and sane) oh those many years ago when we both had toddler boys. of course, now i have a job and a life and just no time to read blogs (ahem). but i keep on checking in on finslippy. ever my favorite. because it's different somehow. i guess i think you are my real friend and if I run into you someday I'll be all oh-my-god-its-alice! and you'll run away in fear because i'm a total stranger.
i'm eating cheese as we type. a "triple-cream soft ripened cheese. from france." because you can't be too fancy when you decide to comment on a blog for the first time. that's my motto.

Hi Alice, I have been a reader for over four years and I think I have only commented once when you needed a pick-me-up. I don't know how I found you, but I think from some other blogs favorite list. I have 2 kids 4 yr old girl and 7 yr old boy (a fellow lego fanatic!). I have returned to school to get my RN license. When I need a break from the endless studying, I come here and am so excited when I see a new post.

Thank you for all the entertainment over the years. I am not someone who laughs often, but your writing often gets me there. I may even start exercising regularing again after reading your last post!

Congrats on 7 years, keep it up!

Hi Alice! Jen here. I read and don't often comment. Maybe I've never commented... so... hoorah! Commenting!

I've read your blog for a few years now and my favorite post EVER is Minty Bear II. Probably twice a year, I'll be hanging out with my friend Sarah (who also reads your blog) and one of us will say "Ahhh Minty. Good old minty bear." and then we'll crack up. The writing in that post is spot on. :)

My favorite cheese is brie and I too live in Brooklyn! Happy 7 years! :)

Hi Alice! Congrats on seven years of writing an excellently funny and heartfelt account of your life as a mom (and other things). I've been reading your blog for about 4 years now, and though I seldom comment, I do make a point of daily stopping by to see what you've written. I found you, I believe, through Heather Armstrong's blog... you are very funny and insightful and I hope you continue writing in your wonderful witty way. As for my favorite fromage.... I love almost all cheese, but I think my favorites are the creamy, super-fattening varieties - like Brie, Camembert, and the like... :) Keep up the great work!

I don't remember how I found your blog. I have been reading it for a long time though and always enjoy your writing and humor! I have a son that lives in your area (near Prospect Park.) He plays the flute ( beatbox )and used to play a lot in the subway. Now he tours with a chamber group all over the place. His group also goes into schools and gives concerts and classes.

I think I have probably only commented once before, but I've been reading for years. I truly enjoy reading your blog, though I don't remember what link I followed that first led me here.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteremily

Hi -
I'm not sure whether I've commented in the past, but I just wanted to say hey, and let you know how much I enjoy your work. It really has been a pleasure!
Happy blogiversary!

I don't know how I got here, but I've been reading for a while. I love cheese but am lactose intolerant. Sorry, I had to say it!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAndi

I am one of the lurkers! Hello! And now I have no idea what to say. This is why I hide over here in the corner. But I love reading your blog.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPenny

I think I started reading now and then after I saw you on a momversation about vaccines. When you said you'd given Henry a couple extra just for kicks, I knew you were my kind of woman. I just got around to subscribing recently, though, so now I'm mainlining your bloggy goodness. I like it that while it's clear you love Henry with the fire of the sun, there is nothing treacly about your writing. Also, you're funny as hell, and smart.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLisa R.

Oh yes, crying. As I often do. THANKS, Alice. (No really, I'm a tension decreaser, so I dig the crying.)

i've been reading for YEARS, and i don't think i have EVER commented. so here you go! i think you are great!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterchristina

A cheese shop opened up nearby and the display case is so pretty and packed with yummy cheese that I sometimes discover I've had my face pressed up against it for several minutes. They assure me it happens all the time.

I've been reading your blog for years now and I think you're great. And not just because you use the word doozie.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRachel K

Hi Alice,

I've commented a few times before. I don't remember how I found you but I've always felt a kinship. We're the same age and, from what I have gathered over the years, we grew up in the same general area and we probably know some of the same people from high school (although we didn't go to school together).

Anyway - I love all cheeses! I love hearing you talk about Henry (I have a daughter the same age) and I really admire your writing. Happy Blog Birthday!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPetey

Happy blogiversary!

Like many others I non longer have any idea how I got here originally.

Favorite cheese - Havarti with dill

ps: I'm so jealous that you have a kid who looks like you. My son could be his father's clone except for the hair and eye colors which are my mother's exactly.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKate

7 years! Isn't that like 49 dog years?

I'm a reader from sunny Northern California - not sure how i found you, but I'm a big fan and have been reading for a while now.

Keep up the good work you humdinger, you!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGab

Well, if I have to . . . I think I figure I don't have a right to comment frequently because a) I don't have a blog of my own; b) I'm so old that you'll feel as if your mother just sat down & the room got very quiet & now everyone is awkwardly eating chips because they don't want to keep talking about young stuff & the sound of chip crunching is unduly loud.

But while I'm here, let me ask: does anyone know of some good blogging by women in their early (REALLY early) 60's? I love reading the stuff by all you young whippersnappers, but it seems to me that some Older Girls should be writing as well, no?

I do not have a cheese preference. I can take or leave the stuff. I cannot leave the cookies.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLinda

'Alo!

I don't recall where I found your blog either, but I've been reading it lurkily for years. I tend not to comment unless I have something specific to add, but I'll come out of hiding temporarily at your request. :)

Congrats on your blogiversary!
