Seven years!

As of tomorrow, I'll have been writing this blog for seven years. My blog's a first-grader! When I began writing here, Henry was sixteen months old; now he's shaving. (Well, he could shave. His legs, anyway. Kid's got some hairy legs.)

Here's a visual, to help you cry. My baby then:

And now:

He wanted me to sled.

I know.

Before I start looking at more pictures of my son as an adorable toddler and spend the rest of the afternoon bawling on the couch, I wanted to say thank you. The last seven years have been action-packed, in both excellent and terrible ways, and through it all you've supported me, cheered me on, and given me a kick in the ass when I needed it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

According to my stats there are many of you who read and never comment. Which is fine, but today, please say hello! Tell me who you are, what brought you to Finslippy, what you're up to, what your favorite cheese is--whatever. I really don't care. I mean, I care, but I'm not going to demand you tell me your life story. But I would welcome hearing your life story! If you felt like writing it. I'll stop now.

As a reward for commenting, you'll be in the running to receive a copy of my friend Jessie Sholl's new book, Dirty Secret. I wrote about Jessie's book on my Redbook blog, but I wanted to do a giveaway here. Dirty Secret is Jessie's story of growing up with a mom who's a hoarder, and it's a doozie of a book. (And yes, I did just write the word "doozie." I couldn't decide between that and "humdinger.") It's funny and harrowing and ultimately uplifting. You will enjoy it! So comment, and a week from today I'll announce the winner.

Happy Birthday, Finslippy!
I've been reading for...I don't even know how long, but it's been years.

I can't pick a favorite cheese--I love them all!

I love reading your blog. My daughter brought you to my attention..and well ever since I've been a lurker. Not normally one to comment on blogs but definitely a commenter in person. Just try to shut me up...not gonna happen. But anyways...I love your humor and the way you say things definitely strikes a chord with me. So...Hello and I love blue cheese.

CONGRATULATIONS! And oh my god - that baby pic. Jeeeesus.

I don't remember how/when I started coming here, but I've been here for years. My current life story is that I'm in my last semester of grad school for my master of social work degree, and all of my spare time is spent volunteer-running a free inner-city healthcare clinic. My goddamn ovaries are screaming now at the pic of baby Henry, so thanks for that.

Anyway, congratulations again. I love your writing style and your snark and though my rss-feed waxes and wanes, Finslippy is a staple.

Hello, Congratulations. I have no idea how I got here, but am so happy that I found you. Your stories make me cry, smile and laugh. Ok, so I commented for you and now I am off to look at pictures of my kids when they were toddlers and start bawling.

Hm. . . it appears that I am not at all alone in having no idea how I first found you. For that matter, I cannot remember how long ago I found you, or what I had for breakfast. But the breakfast thing may not be anything I can blame on the internet culture that allows us to hop from one place to another. But I might try. So, I will tell you this much about me: I am so highly programmed to suggestibility that I got up to get some cheese for a snack. Or maybe it's lunch. Time will tell. I am glad that you write here. So I can laugh and cry with you. Carry on. . .

Hi Alice! I never comment but happy anniversary! I love your stories, and I think Henry's birth story is what brought me here the first time, linked from some other blog. You're in my top 5 though, with wonderful Julia of Hippogriffs and Julie of ALP, and of course Alexa. I've probably been reading for three years. Love Henry (my 2 year old has a similar name), love your real hair color, and am also tiny on top and... more Italian on the bottom. I ordered the hoarding book from the library and can't wait to read it (my in-laws are serious hoarders, it'll be cathartic).

Lots of readerly love

Happy Birthday, Blog! You were brought to my attention by a former co-worker. More specifically, he'd read the post about preparing for your tenth anniversary trip to Paris, and told me, "My god, she's just like YOU."

To this day, the phrase "Pardon me—does the United States still exist?" holds a special place in my heart.

Been reading and enjoying your posts almost daily since then, but too shy and anxiety-prone to post before now. Favorite cheese? Goat, definitely.

Hi Alice! I'm not sure how I found you 4 or 5 years ago, but I remember finding a group of lovely ladies that I now follow religiously when a bunch of you were linking to each other's child birth stories....

I don't have a favorite cheese. OMG. I am 35 and I don't have a favorite cheese. What is wrong with me?!?

Also, this may be the first comment I've ever left on your blog! So to sum up 4+ years of following you and your life: thank you SO MUCH. You are heart-warming, hilarious, disturbing and educational, all of which may or may not have occurred in the same post. Wait! That all probably occurred in your birth story post! Now I have to go find it..... :)

Happy blog birthday!

Wow, congrats on 7 years! I only discovered you relatively recently, and I'll be damned if I can remember how or where. But I do remember reading a couple of posts and really loving your writing style. You ever read something and go "Wow, when I write, I wish I wrote like *that*."? That was my first impression of your blog.

Unrelated: My favorite cheese is Muenster.

My favorite cheeses are stanky mixed-milk cheeses (part goat, part sheep, part unicorn) that are oozy and delicious with pears and baguette. Yums.

Love the blog! Keep on keepin' on.

i found your blog years ago when i had a really boring job and started reading a bunch of blogs during the day (far too many really). it was on someone's blog roll, but i can't remember whose. i've been reading off and on since then depending on how busy i've been at this job (lately not so much, so hi!!).
happy anniversary!!

Don't know how I found you; I've been reading for a year or two now.

I never met a cheese I didn't like...

Hi Alice! Happy Blogday. Let's see..I think Dooce brought me to Finslippy, but it's the writing that keeps me coming back. That, and the fact that I have a son and live in Brooklyn. So there's a kinship. Take care! Jen

Congrats on seven years! I've been blogging that long too. I just keep starting over every few months so no one will ever know. ;-)

I think I came here after hearing about you on Dooce's website, or something that was done in connection with her (I think it was before the Momversation videos, but can't be sure).

Right now I'm on maternity leave with daughter #2. And after 10 years of living in this house I'm finally having a dishwasher installed today. And I'm thrilled! My husband says he doesn't mind doing dishes, but I think he's secretly excited as well.

I don't much care for cheese. I only like mozzarella on pizza and Italian dishes. And American cheese for grilled cheese sandwiches. :-)

I have NO idea what brought me here - probably a link from one of the other gazillion blogs I read. Congrats on 7 years!

Congratulations on seven years of writing. I don't always comment. Sorry! I came here when I was pointed in your direction by an infertility blogger. You were having a hard time, as I was, and I wanted to say I was sorry. It was before I had a baby I think. I went on to have a son, who will also be an only child. I keep reading because I love stories about mama's and their boys.

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

I found you at the first blogher convention back when I first started blogging. You were with Dooce, and Mighty Girl, and all the cheer leaders at the popular table, and I was in the corner telling fart jokes. Is it any wonder my blog is dead now? Keep up the good work! Happy Seven!

January 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRonna

I rarely comment, but am a loyal reader. I love you! Found you by reading Dooce, maybe? I can't remember.

I am happily married, with a son who is 8. We have suffered miscarriages and I struggle with decision to try again. I am a happy, sarcastic girl who suffers from anxiety and panic attacks. You have given many of my feelings words, and I thank you for that!

Hey Alice! I found your blog in 2006 through Eden's blog. I found Eden's blog because I was Googling people who cut their own hair short. Niche! I've been a regular reader since then and even though I'm a childless whippersnapper in Austin, TX I've really enjoyed reading about your life and your journey and relishing your writing. Congratulations on your son and your blog! You're an inspiration!

don't remember how I found you - but glad I did!

Congratulations on 7 years!!

I comment sometimes. I think you are HILARIOUS and the world does not give you enough credit. Seriously.

And (psst don't tell Redbook...) but....I think your writing is so witty that it "goes over their heads" sometimes over there. Know what I mean? You'll have come up with a hilarious quip, and the comments will be like WELL MY BABBY IS 2 YEERS OLD.

It's important to have a sense of humor in life (and in parenting), and you bring such hilarity and intelligence to your writing. Thank you for that.

I like Brie. ;-)

Happy blogoversary to you! I've been reading for awhile now, and need to be better with comments. Love your stories, your writing style, your sass (ha), and everything really. I look forward to lots more reading to come!
