We are so back!
Winners! That's you. You are all winners, in mine eyes.
Nonetheless, I do in fact have five winners for the A GOOD HARD LOOK giveaway. I will announce them when they are CONFIRMED as actual live human beings and not spambot MILF-hunters. (Curse you, spambot MILF-hunters! Stop sending me filthy Twitter spam and then adding insult to injury by trying to win free books from me!)
I am pleased to inform you that my family and I traveled to California and back--and lived. Miracle of miracles! The planes remained aloft! The pilots did not forget their years of training! I lived yet another day without spontaneously combusting! Will wonders never cease?
(Did anyone else read The Book of Lists when they were little? I skated right over the dirty parts in that book so I could preoccupy myself with tales of spontaneous combustion. It seemed not only possible, to me, but likely. Of course I would burst into flames for no reason. Of course my mom would come to wake me for school and find a pile of ashes lying in a me-shape in my otherwise pristine, unburned bed. It would just figure.)
I went to BlogHer for precisely 22 hours (I counted!) and then Rebecca whisked me away for dinner with Bethany, who I've only wanted to meet for forever. It was a lovely ending to a crazy but awfully fun day, during which Eden and I signed countless books and I somehow managed to not see countless people I went there specifically to see. BlogHer is getting a little... big, for me. Not bad. Just big. SO BIG. I was overwhelmed. After dinner, and once we found Rebecca's car (it took a while) (she's pregnant, you guys! With twins! She's THREE PEOPLE!), she kindly drove me north to Carlsbad, where I met Scott and Henry at Legoland.
Oh, Legoland. What can I say about this "Legoland"? If you were to ask Henry what his dream vacation would be, he could not have devised a more perfect place than this. An entire park dedicated to the thing he loves more than food and sleep and also us? He'd probably leave out the mean parents who curbed his spendthrift impulses, which kicked in every time he saw a gift shop, oh and p.s. there's a gift shop every few feet. Despite his frustrations with us and our damned sense, he had so much fun.
Of course, if you asked me what my dream vacation would be, it would not at all resemble Legoland. Nonetheless, Henry's utter glee was contagious, and the experience was entertaining enough for two days. (I don't know how you could do Legoland for more than two days.) My main stressor during those two days was sun protection, and whether or not we had applied enough so that we wouldn't be destroyed by the awful yellow orb in the sky but not so much that we resembled zombies. There seems to be no way to achieve this happy medium, by the way. Lord knows I tried. Also, is there a wide-brimmed hat that does not look completely dorky? Answer: no. Don't even bother answering that one for me.
We returned at 2 a.m., Tuesday morning, and I have still not recovered. I am a delicate flower. Dim the lights on your way out, would you? Be a dear.

I remember really liking Legoland. I preferred it over Disney, that's for certain.
I'm with you on the hats. Absolute must for me, but I always look like a retiree who should be gardening (never like Audrey Hepburn, sadly).
I am still sad that the 22 hours I was at Blogher did not overlap with the 22 hours you were at Blogher. Not that it would have mattered, anyway, because the conference was so darn big that I didn't meet anyone new and spent crazy amounts of time just texting and tweeting with the people I did know so we could see each other and exchange 3 minutes of harried conversation. (Or you know, pork belly. But that's my crowd.) My entire twitter stream looks like this "I want to meet you!" "Me too! Are you going to Session 3?" "Oh, heading for Expo Hall now! See you there?" "Just leaving expo hall, you there?" "Maybe next year!"
Delicate flowers are the best sort.
I am glad your stay was brief but good. My husband and kids love legoland and the three years we lived in San Diego had passes and went a lot, like a real lot! I went once But to my family it was Mecca. A plastic shiny Mecca.
Doing anything with you would make me happy.
Why? Because you know you're walking on eggshells everywhere you go...that might be bombs...that may blow up...because you never know.
Did the workers tighten that ride before we got on? Those are my thoughts as we wander around Legoland every year.
Love that you would never laugh at me, if you ever heard me ask that.
LOVED FINALLY MEETING YOU, ALICE.
So much.
Last year, BlogHer for me was about meeting all the cool people I read on a daily basis. Not so much this year. I spent more time meeting new people and really enjoying the heck out of some of those sessions. It was really nice to see you and Eden. I like to think that I helped to burn the importance of sunscreen into your brain.
So the trick to big floppy hats is total commitment. Yes, you look like a dork wearing one with your usual modern summerwear. But! If you also wear a long flow-y dress, and, I dunno, maybe some gloves or a shawl? Some statement jewelry at the very least, then you pass through dorkitude into artistry, or at least charming eccentricity. At least, that's the take of someone who went to film school and now does costuming as a hobby, and whose mother and maternal grandmother had malignant melanomas. Hmmm... that might be a highly specific strategy.
Anyway, Athleta sells hats with an interior elastic band so you're not spending all your time keeping it from blowing off your head (oh, I'm also in Chicago - whooosh!) and Australian companies are vary serious about sun protection.
I do not like sun in my eyes and sunglasses are not enough. Neither is living in northeastern Ohio because even though the sun never really shines here, it is still kind of glary. I have tride all sorts of hats and have hated every one. I have a big head and thick hair and they all feel too small. I also think my hair is too short for a hat. I like Kat's suggestion of going all out and I may just try that next year. Perhaps I am overthinking it.
Oh, and glad you had a good trip.
I love you. I loved seeing you. And getting lost with you. And forcing you to listen to "Frankie"s serenade over dinner. So glad Henry loved Legoland! Love to the fam, loverwoman.
Wow! BlogHer sounds like tons of craziness....I mean fun! Glad to hear you survived. :)
I think they need to open one of those Legolands over here on the east coast.
I'd heard rumors of your presence at BlogHer, but was sadly unable to confirm them in person. Perhaps next year...
My whole family loved the miniature cities at Legoland. But TWO DAYS at Legoland? I can't imagine. Our one day there seemed long. (We did skip the waterpark thing, though. I guess we could have survived a 2nd day if we'd gone to the waterpark.)
My daughter appears to have survived camp louse-free. But her tiny flecks of dandruff dance around from static electricity and terrify me.
I have never, ever heard anyone else mention that they too lived in fear of spontaneous combustion thanks to the Book of Lists. How did we both latch on to that specific mode of death? Why weren't we afraid of perishing by getting our scarf caught in the tire of a car or something? I guess because spontaneous combustion could happen so -- spontaneously, while you were doing any old thing, it seemed. And then that show "That's Incredible" exacerbated the fear with their real stories and pictures. Man, those were scary times. I've lurked here before, but I feel a little closer to you now. :)
Is it wrong that I am insanely happy you mentioned MILF hunters? My blog is just starting, but there seem to be a lot of pedophiles, and it's giving me horrific nightmares! Glad to know it is normal. Not pedophilia, of course, but that they are doing searches leading to a parenting blog. That's normal, right? Or is it?!
Isn't it wonderful when planes do their thing and stay in the air? My 8 yo is a lala for Legos. Glad to hear it's all they say it is.
I was also somewhat obsessed with "The Book of Lists" when I was young. That, and things like "Ripley's Believe it or Not" books and others such keepers of crazy info. I did a high school science paper on spontaneous human combustion, and also - during my "Elephant Man" phase (well, not my phase - I don't have the disease - but it was around the time the movie came out), did one on neurofibromatosis. Yep, a little kooky - but my school and teachers tolerated it well! I could still (if I had the time) sit down and read those kinds of things. My son is carrying on the tradition - he loves Guiness Book of World Records - lol!
I have paid attention to, thank you for sharing!
